Background of the Study
Stroke is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among elderly patients globally, including in Nigeria. Effective management of stroke requires a multifaceted approach, including medical treatment, rehabilitation, and nursing care. Geriatric nurses, who specialize in the care of elderly individuals, play a vital role in the management of stroke patients, particularly in addressing the unique needs of older adults. In Kaduna State, the number of elderly stroke patients is increasing, and the role of geriatric nurses in providing specialized care is becoming more critical (Aliyu et al., 2023). This review aims to explore the role of geriatric nurses in managing stroke patients and their impact on recovery and quality of life.
Statement of the Problem
Stroke management among the elderly is a complex and ongoing challenge. The recovery process often involves not only physical rehabilitation but also psychological support, which can be effectively provided by geriatric nurses. However, the extent to which geriatric nurses in Kaduna State are involved in stroke management, and their effectiveness in improving patient outcomes, is under-researched. This study seeks to review existing literature and assess the role of geriatric nurses in the management of stroke patients in the region.
Objectives of the Study
To review the role of geriatric nurses in managing stroke patients in Kaduna State.
To assess the impact of geriatric nurses' involvement on the recovery outcomes of stroke patients.
To identify challenges faced by geriatric nurses in managing elderly stroke patients in Kaduna State.
Research Questions
What role do geriatric nurses play in the management of stroke patients in Kaduna State?
How does the involvement of geriatric nurses affect the recovery outcomes of stroke patients?
What challenges do geriatric nurses face in managing elderly stroke patients in Kaduna State?
Research Hypotheses
Geriatric nurses' involvement in stroke management is positively correlated with improved recovery outcomes for elderly stroke patients.
Stroke patients under the care of geriatric nurses experience better rehabilitation progress than those without specialized nursing care.
Geriatric nurses face significant challenges in providing care for elderly stroke patients in Kaduna State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This review will focus on the role of geriatric nurses in managing elderly stroke patients in Kaduna State. The study is limited by the availability of comprehensive data on geriatric nursing practices in the region and potential variations in nursing practices across different healthcare settings.
